Home Down Under

A little over 36 hours after leaving Chicago, I finally made it to Sydney. It's been six years since I was here, but I instantly felt like I was back at home. Fortunately the city is much like I remember it, and even better in most regards. Although Olympic fever no longer swirls about the city, there is a definite buzz that still permeates within it. Perhaps it was Sydney - not Olympic - fever that I felt back then?

Either way, I'm happy to finally be back. I think I could live here. Sydney has plenty to offer. It's certainly one of the most picturesque cities in the world. The people are ridiculously friendly and outgoing. There are outdoor activities galore to choose from. Nightlife and culture abounds. Warm weather, great beaches. Pretty much everything I'd want.

I'm looking forward to celebrating New Year's here. It seems to be an even bigger deal here than I thought. I started looking for a place to stay a few weeks ago. But, it seems that nearly every hotel, hostel and park bench has been booked for at least a month now. I'm not sure even NYC books that early. For the moment, I have a hotel about 30-40 minutes out in the burbs and I'm hoping that something pops up in the next few weeks closer into town.

I leave for New Zealand in two days and come back to Australia mid month. Right now I'm planning to be in Sydney for the week around New Year's and head up the coast to Brisbane and then down to Melbourne in the weeks before and after NYE. Perhaps a quick trip out to Uluru (Ayer's Rock) as well. Right now I'm still trying to put it all together and enjoying being back down under.
